Short History of Baton Rouge

Established on the eastern bank of the Mississippi River in Southern Louisiana, Baton Rouge has a rich and complex history that extends back several centuries. French explorers founded the city in 1699, although the area was originally inhabited by indigenous tribes.

Named 'Baton Rouge' ('Red Stick') after a blood-stained pole marking the boundary between tribal hunting grounds, the city would go on to transition between French, British, and Spanish control. It briefly served as a Confederate capital during the Civil War, and later, it became a hub of the civil rights movement in the 1960s.

Today, Baton Rouge thrives as Louisiana's second-largest city, distinguished by its vibrant culture, industry, and unique blend of influences from Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
